The operator
who became a visionary.

"Strategy without execution is hallucination. Execution without strategy is chaos. You need both."

Lars Winkelbauer is a globally recognized executive leader and strategist at the intersection of predictive intelligence, aviation, logistics, and hospitality transformation. With more than 20 years of experience building airlines, leading billion-dollar operations, and guiding organizations through digital and cultural transformation, Lars brings a rare combination of operational credibility and strategic foresight to the most complex challenges in global commerce.

Executive Leadership

As Executive Vice President & Chief Operating Officer of Polar Air Cargo (2018–2021), Lars held full P&L responsibility for a $1.5 billion joint venture between Atlas Worldwide Holdings and DHL Express, managing 220 direct employees and 500+ contractor staff worldwide. During his tenure, Lars pioneered comprehensive digital transformation, implementing Salesforce and launching an eBooking platform that generated 52% of all bookings by 2020 — a remarkable adoption rate in an industry known for resistance to change.

Under Lars's leadership, Polar achieved a record-low 0.7% employee turnover rate compared to an industry average of 15%, driven by innovative culture programs including "Polarfied" training, "Ideas in Motion," and "Skill Share" initiatives that boosted employee satisfaction metrics by 9%. The organization also exceeded compliance targets at 97.1% versus a 90% goal while embedding sustainability practices across procurement and operations.

Asia Pacific Transformation

Prior to returning to Polar, Lars served as Vice President of Aviation, Network Planning & Control for DHL Express Asia Pacific (2014–2018), where he led aviation operations, network planning, and capacity optimization across 41 countries with a $500 million P&L and over $1 billion in operating budget. During this period, Lars introduced the A330-200F converted freighter — the first of its kind deployed globally — and directed strategic carrier renegotiations that reduced linehaul costs by 10%, saving nearly $72 million annually. Lars also served as Deputy Chairman of the Board of Directors for Air Hong Kong, and held board positions at Tasman Cargo Airlines (Australia) and Blue Dart Aviation (India).

Building the Foundation

Lars's career began at Lufthansa German Airlines & Cargo (1999–2003), working across Africa (Johannesburg), the Middle East (Dubai), and the Americas (Atlanta). He then joined Polar Air Cargo in 2003, rising from Director of Capacity Management to Vice President over 11 years, architecting the DHL joint venture that resulted in DHL's acquisition of 49% of Polar's parent company. Monthly revenues grew from $20.5M to $70M. A military small-package business with the Department of Defense generated $90M annually.

Advisory, Thought Leadership & Publishing

Since 2021, Lars has advised on launching a new all-cargo airline in Vietnam, developed a 10-year strategic plan for a legacy airline cargo division, and assisted autonomous aviation technology startups with regulatory approval across Asia Pacific. He is the author of The Invisible Highway: Why Air Cargo Rules Your Life (And Could Rule Your Career) — an accessible introduction to the global air cargo industry written to inspire the next generation of professionals, available on Amazon. He is also a contributor to trade publications including Aerospace & Defense Review and The STAT Trade Times, and a contributing author to an upcoming book on air cargo management.
