$5,300 Gold and a Silent Fed. Why Trump's Troops Are Headed East.

The market thinks this is a drill. I've seen this movie before. Gold is hitting records not because of inflation — but because the world is positioning for what comes next. The Fed is paralysed. The troops are moving. The clock has started.

$5,300 gold is not a bubble. It's a signal.

Central banks have been accumulating bullion at a pace not seen since the 1970s — seventeen consecutive months of buying from China alone. Global gold ETF holdings hit a new record in January, with Asian investors leading the surge. They are not doing this because they believe inflation will hit 2.4%. They are doing it because they see what the average equity investor refuses to: the dollar is being systematically devalued, and the institution responsible for managing that process is paralysed.

The Federal Reserve met this week. The market priced in a 99% chance of no change. The Fed delivered exactly that — nothing. Rates stay at 3.50–3.75%. One more cut projected for all of 2026. One. For the entire year. Can't raise — the economy is too fragile. Can't cut — inflation is too sticky. So they do nothing. And gold does exactly what gold has always done when paper money loses institutional trust.

Now let's talk about the troops.

The headlines called it 'deterrence.' But I've spent 20 years watching how the global logistics machine actually works — running billion-dollar operations across 41 countries, pricing risk when others were reading press releases. And what I see right now is not deterrence.

From January 5 to 25, no American aircraft carrier operated in CENTCOM's area of responsibility — the first such gap since October 2023. Then the USS Abraham Lincoln was quietly ordered to CENTCOM, departing the Philippines on January 15 with its full strike group: F-35C stealth fighters, EA-18G Growlers for electronic warfare, guided-missile destroyers, and mine-sweeping ships. Three Littoral Combat Ships with mine countermeasure packages are now in the Gulf. At Al Udeid Air Base, the number of KC-135 Stratotankers has surged significantly above normal levels. Tankers extend the range of strike aircraft. You only deploy mine-clearing ships when you expect a waterway to be mined.

This is not a defensive posture. It's the opening move of a conflict that will close the Strait of Hormuz.

The Strait is 34 kilometres wide at its narrowest point. The shipping lanes are two miles each. Through them passes 20% of global seaborne oil, 20% of global LNG, and the feedstocks for roughly a quarter of the world's plastic production every single day. The market is treating the troop movements as geopolitical noise. The market is wrong.

Look at where prices are today: WTI crude at $72 per barrel — still pricing continuity. Shipping freight rates — stable, which means the risk premium hasn't been built in yet. War risk insurance on Strait transits — 0.125% of hull value, peacetime rates. These numbers are going to change.

In operations, we had a rule: the time to price disruption is before it happens. The cost of waiting is always greater than the cost of preparation. Always.

Watch the ship tracks. Watch the insurance premiums. When the Abraham Lincoln strike group arrives in CENTCOM waters on January 26, the clock has started.

The world moves faster than the systems built to manage it. The future moves first.

Predictive Intelligence. Human Insight. — Lars P.S. In 90 days, when the Strait is contested and oil is north of $100, someone will ask: 'How did no one see this coming?' I'm writing this now so you can say you did.

Key questions

Why did gold hit record highs in January 2026?
Gold reached record levels in January 2026 driven by central bank accumulation — particularly from China — combined with Fed paralysis between competing risks of inflation and recession, geopolitical positioning in the Middle East, and institutional safe-haven rotation.
What was the US military buildup in the Middle East in January 2026?
Beginning January 15, 2026, the USS Abraham Lincoln carrier strike group was ordered to CENTCOM, joined by mine-sweeping Littoral Combat Ships and a significant surge of refuelling tankers at Al Udeid Air Base — the largest US military pre-positioning since 2003.
